1/22 - 1/28: CYRM Nominee Nubs

5th - 4th Grade: Connecting to last weeks work with Google Earth, we will read the first California Young Reader Medal Nominee Nubs: The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine & a Miracle. The setting of the story will be discussed in relation to our Google Earth findings. 3rd Grade: Continuing Internet Safety - Review of Safe Side Hot Tips. Discuss, brainstorm what is personal information to create a poster for what needs to be protected.

1/14 - 1/18: Reference Materials: Atlases & Google Earth

Reference books and materials are available in all our media centers. The atlas, dictionary, thesaurus, encyclopedia and almanac are all examples of reference books. They are books or online sources that we don't normally read from beginning to end, but rather go to when we have a question to answer. This week we will be using the atlas and Google Earth to learn more about the setting of the California Young Reader Medal nominee, Nubs.

1/7 - 1/11: It's Awards Time!

Students will explore reasons why books may get awards.  Several children's book awards will be discussed through a slideshow, and students will be introduced to this year's California Young Reader Medal Nominees for Picture Books for Older Readers.


Kindergarten: It's Awesome Author Time! William Steig, You're it! Students will listen to William Steig's Pete's a Pizza, then create virtual pizzas on www.abcya.com. Students can also choose to explore other William Steig books.

12/17 - 12/21: Internet Safety - Stranger Danger

Students will learn that what they see and read isn't always true on the internet, and they need to be aware of "Cyber Snakes". Students will watch the final chapters, 11-14, of The Safe Side Video.

12/10 - 12/14: Internet Safety - Email, Downloads & Pop Ups

Students will learn how to avoid the dangers of some emails, downloads and pop ups by viewing chapters 4-7 of The Safe Side video. Students will create a venn diagram comparing and contrasting email vs. regular mail to highlight added dangers that could be hidden in emails.

12/3 - 12/7: Internet Safety - The Internet is a Place

Students will compare and contrast the internet and their neighborhood. Together students will create a venn diagram. Students will watch the first three chapters of The Safe Side video.
